Today started much slower than any other day… there wasn’t much stirring until about 9:30am, with Pip and I not waking until at least 10am. We woke to discover that the weather wasn’t as great as the day before, in fact, it looked rather snowed over and whited-out at the top of the mountain. Luckily, however, it didn’t look windy through the window, and so we weren’t too concerned.
By the time we had had breakfast, although Ed and Tess had hit the slopes earlier, it was basically 11:30am. This was certainly our most lazy day this far – as other days we had had to catch a bus well before this time. The sleep was well needed by all, however, and the relaxing slow-pace much appreciated.
We hit the slopes after finally getting organised, and managed to ski one run with Ed and Tess before they decided that it was time for lunch. We didn’t have the same feelings about the matter, and decided to ski another run before coming in for a (very) premature lunch – although funnily enough, it was actually our latest lunch of the entire trip so far. For lunch, we returned to the apartment and had soup and nachos – kindly cooked for us by Nat, who had already made many many trips to the general store in the next building over.
After enjoying a nice home-cooked lunch, something we hadn’t done very often the past few weeks, we hit the slopes again to try and do a few more runs than we had done during the morning. At the top of the mountain, Pip led us through the trees on some certainly crazy ‘tree runs’. Upon reaching the bottom, we discovered that it was 3:27pm, with lifts taking the last ride at 3:30pm for the Gondola and 4pm for the quad chair. Ed and I decided to take the gondola to the top one last time, but Pip and Tess decided they were only going to ski another run on the chair. After a nice ride down, and almost getting stuck (needing to walk back to the village), we rejoined at the base of the hotel building to store our equipment for the night.
We relaxed for a short while in the room, before deciding to head out into the village. Tess and I hired ice skates and hockey sticks, and headed for the ice rink, while everyone else hit the shops. The weather was pleasant, but chilly, and the village was incredibly quiet. We were the only two on the rink, and spent about 15 minutes there before Pip, Ed and Nat joined us (although only spectating).
After returning to the room briefly, we decided to eat out for dinner. We dined at a restaurant just next door to the hotel, Extreme Peaks, requiring us to walk only metres out in the cold, and now snowing weather. Dinner was nice, and quick, and we returned to the apartment not long after to sit down, and relax in front of the TV – sounds like we were pretending we were home!
After a generally enjoyable, yet lazy day, we all retired to bed in preparation for yet another day’s skiing here at Kicking Horse tomorrow, in hopefully sunny weather to enable us to see the fantastic views that this location provides.
Hope all is going well back home – speak to you all soon!
