Day 3 at Kicking Horse started a little earlier than the day before, but still not overly early (in comparison to days gone by). We ate breakfast in the apartment, dining on French Toast, cereal and bacon & eggs. Ed and Tess hit the slopes, as always, earlier than Pip and I, but only by 30 minutes or so. The weather wasn’t as nice as Monday, being cloudy and a little bit cold, but the cloud layer was only in the middle of the mountain, so at the top is was relatively clear, and at the base the same. Odd hey.
Pip and I took it easy, taking the Catamount Quad chair (about 1/4 the way up the mountain) and skied a few of Pip’s favourite runs, including ‘Big Ben’. We caught up with everyone else and took the Gondola all the way to the top of the mountain. A run like this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the runs taken on the way down. Should you choose to take the beginners’ trail all the way to the bottom, the run could be in excess of 10km – that’s quite a run, and certainly something to keep the thighs warm.
By the time we had skied 2 runs on the chair, and 1 run on the gondola, it was lunchtime… well, according to us at least. We all went back to the apartment and bumped into Nat, who was making her way back from the General Store (with lunch). The group dined on tomato soup (as per Pip’s request), garlic bread and nachos. Although we were feeling a tad lazy after lunch, and Pip and I just wanted to sit on the couch for a while, Ed convinced us to hit the slopes again.
Tess took some time out to do a bit of ice skating, but the rest of us continued skiing for a while. We tried to do as many runs as we could before 3:30pm (when the last ride was), but more importantly, so that we had time to get back to the apartment, get organised, and get out on the snow-tubing slope. Unfortunately, unlike Silver Star (coming up soon), tubing is only available until 5pm on most nights. Only Pip and I decided to go tubing – everyone else’s loss I guess.
We stayed, and played, for almost an hour (and were the only people using the park). Just in case you have no idea what I’m talking about, snow tubing is where you use an inflatable tube, with a solid bottom, to slide down these waterslide-style tracks made of ice. There is certainly some video of the activity, and should be many photos when we finally get to do it at Silver Star (which is better overall).
After tubing, we wandered back to the apartment – via the shops, of course. Dinner was had in-house, again a nice change to restaurant meals all the time, having pasta, chicken and more garlic bread. Pip contemplated returning to the restaurant downstairs in order to have another ‘Apple Betty’ dessert (basically apple crumble with cinnamon), but we decided against it due to being very tired. Everybody had an early night, except Pip and I, who found ourselves tied to the A&E channel CSI marathon, which would have been alright, except that the last episode we watched was a ‘to be continued…’ episode. We, therefore, had to watch yet another hour if we wanted to know the resolution – which we did. It wasn’t too much of a problem, however, as it was only 9:30pm when we finally went to bed (which felt like about 1am, seeing as though the sun was completely set before 6pm).
After a busy day everyone finally was asleep, ready for yet another day here at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. We still have 2 days remaining, leaving here on Saturday morning.
Hope everyone is well back there!
Keep on keeping up!
(Apologies again about the photos – it looks like I may not be able to get those up until at least Saturday, unless we have a change of speed here. Stay tuned though!)
