Canada 10/11 – Kicking Horse Day 4 – Fresh powder… almost

Dec 27, 2010
Today we woke to find a covering of new snow here at Kicking Horse – 4cm to be exact, which is possibly why I wasn’t as excited as everyone else to get up and moving at the crack of dawn. Nat, Tess and Ed headed out just after 9am to meet the arriving bus from Banff, where Jasmine, April, Callum, Belinda and Andrew, some fellow travellers from Australia, had come for a day trip. The bus, while due at 9:15am, didn’t arrive until about 10am, so I was secretly glad that I hadn’t missed anything by sleeping in a little more. The keen crew skied a few runs before I met up with them to continue just after 11am. Strangely for Kicking Horse today, crowds... [Read More]

Canada 10/11 – Kicking Horse Day 3 – Snow falls… finally

Dec 26, 2010
Today the morning started very much the way it had the last few days – quite slack really, with Ed and Tess hitting the slopes quite a bit earlier than me. It wasn’t early for anybody, however, with the clock reading about 10:30am before anyone was outside. The Big Bang marathon of the previous day and night was still continuing, but as they were repeating episodes from Season 1, we had seen everything nearly three times by now. I finally made my way outside about 11:30am and met up with Ed and Tess to ride the (ever so slow) Catamount Chair part-way up the mountain. Today, all four lifts on the mountain were open (ignoring the Ski School Magic Carpet lift and Snow Tubing lift),... [Read More]

Canada 10/11 – Kicking Horse Day 2 – Merry Christmas!

Dec 25, 2010
Today was Christmas Day, and it was a white Christmas (which was particularly odd for us). Strangely enough, we all got up earlier than usual – about 8:30am for me. Santa had paid us a visit and our stockings – or Christmas gift bags – were filled with little Canadian gifts. It was certainly strange to be waking up with no Christmas tree and no giant dining table set for thousands, but it was full of joy and excitement all the same. Pancakes were the go for Christmas breakfast, and a relaxing morning accompanied by a random TV crime series was how the day began. Ed and Tess headed out for a ski following breakfast, but after discovering that there was an all day (and... [Read More]

Canada 10/11 – Kicking Horse Day 1 – Mega wow!

Dec 24, 2010
Today was our first full day here at Kicking Horse, and to celebrate that, I slept in. The lifts here opened slightly later than Whistler, 9am (instead of 8:30am), but I didn’t get a wake-up call until 10am. The others were much further along on the ‘getting ready’ path, and so I decided to take my time. It was a gloomy looking day, and by all counts, the snow cover certainly wasn’t anything to boast about (not like the 20cm+ of snow they had had at Whistler overnight…). By the time I hit the slopes, it was after 11:30am – Ed and Tess had already skied a few runs, and were in the process of coming down from the top of the mountain. Ed had... [Read More]
